Lath

Lath and plaster refers to the building technique commonly used for the construction of interior walls. The lath itself may be made of wooden slats or wire mesh, and the openings or gaps are designed to allow plaster or stucco to form a stronger bond to the lath by seeping through and hardening in place. A lath may be a wire mesh with paper backing and applied to the framework where stucco will be applied. Typical wood laths, in the traditional sense, are usually made from 1 ½´´ wide by 1/4´´ thick and 3-4-foot-long sawn pieces of wood.

Lath & Plaster

Generally a more traditional wall covering technique, lath and plaster has long been used in home construction chiefly for it´s qualities like thickness and soundproofing abilities. Nowadays drywall has largely taken the place of plaster and lath although not entirely. Lath and plaster still needs to be repaired and that is where we can help.

FAQ

Commonly used for exterior wall cladding for both its durable and aesthetic appeal, stucco is a plastering material that is made of cement, lime and aggregate used in construction, originally a derivative of Italian stucco. A smooth and even finish is attainable when covering brick, stone, concrete, or other hard surfaces.

Though a highly resilient finishing option for your home, a number of factors could contribute to damage and the need for repairs: Water damage, house settling, seismic activity or poor installation can all lead to fractures and blisters and eventually the deterioration of the material.

Stucco can develop holes and cracks, allowing water to seep through and cause damage. Along with increased issues like moisture exposure and damage like wood rot, mold and mildew, small holes can grow into larger ones.

Sometimes it is an underlying issue with the stucco installation causing damage that will ultimately require remediation. Minor issues without these unseen causes can be solved with repair. In cases of stucco peeling or large fissures, the underlying surface must be fixed after first removing the stucco, after which it can be replaced.

Count on us at Nova Plastering to visit your home to make a comprehensive assessment and determine what type of stucco repair will suit your needs best.

You can follow these steps to prevent future damage of your repaired stucco.

1. Regularly inspect, looking for wear, cracks or damage. The earlier found the better.

2. Clean it periodically to remove dirt, debris, and stains. Use a mild detergent and a soft-bristle brush or sponge to gently scrub the surface. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive tools that could damage it.

3. Ensure that any water is directed away from the stucco by keeping gutters clean and functional. Avoid water infiltration causing damage with proper drainage.

5. Trees, bushes or other vegetation can scratch and cause damage to the surface, so it is important to keep these elements trimmed, pruned and maintained always.

6. A clear protective coating can be applied to augment resistance to weathering of your stucco.

Repainting stucco every 5-10 years helps maintain its appearance and protects the underlying material. Before painting, the surface will need to be cleaned with a mild detergent and water, after which two coats of a high-quality paint can be applied for a durable and smooth finish.

Although vinyl siding can be more easily adaptable as well as being more reasonably priced, stucco material itself is more resilient. Both materials, however, have been shown to be very adaptable to a variety of climates.

Due to the numerous advantages of stucco, it has become a popular choice in San Diego home construction. Fire resistant, durable enough to handle harsh weather conditions, it also acts as an insulator regulating indoor temperatures, and can reduce energy consumption. A low maintenance material that will last for decades, it is sought after also for it´s versatility in finishing options. Textured or smooth, painted or stained, you can customize your designs for your home.

Restoring surfaces, cleaning and repairs to your stucco finish are skills that our professional team possess to assist you in any way you may need. That being said, some minor repairs can be done for general maintenance purposes. Scrape off with a putty knife any loose stucco where you notice cracks, and you will be able to patch the area up with an epoxy stucco repair solution. Let the cement mixture cure overnight, then lightly sand it smooth, continuing until you have attained the desired texture.

As long as a solid bond can be formed, new stucco may be applied over existing ones. Be sure to check for hollow areas and cracks before adding new ones to the older stucco. Lightly tapping with a hammer can aid in the visual inspection.

Call us at Nova Plastering today to make sure the job is done correctly by our team of skilled experts who can also guide you through the process of selecting the appropriate coating.

The walls inside and outside of your home are not impervious to the march of time. Water damage can come from leaks, floods and torrential rain that take their toll. Small earthquakes, minor fires and even intense heat can all contribute to deterioration of the drywall and stucco of your house.

Being proactive and watching for these tell-tale signs will help you maintain the quality of the stucco before it´s too late.

  1. Cracks and general damage.

As resilient and weather-proof stucco is it is not invincible. Normal wear and tear can manifest in the form of chips to the surface and hairline cracks and have the chance to deteriorate quickly into larger cracks and moisture that can begin to cause damage to the stucco.

When you spot cracks or general damage, call us to schedule a repaint, or any other repairs that may be necessary.

2. Efflorescence

Efflorescence is best described as a white powder that shows up on the stucco, as water evaporates from the material and leaves deposits of salt that can resemble white lines.

Though it appears as an aesthetic issue, it may lead to larger problems if left untreated like water infiltration and mold, even damage to the structure.

3. Discoloration and fading

When your stucco appears less vibrant than before or has uneven color patches, it is most likely a sign that it is time for new paint.

4. Paint peeling off

When paint is chipping, flaking or peeling off, it is a sure sign that your stucco will require painting.

5. Bubbling paint

As paint flaws develop, the stucco will become more vulnerable to additional damage. Corrosion, mildew and mold can happen as a result of paint that has water vapor between the paint and the walls, causing bubbling.
